AFC Wimbledon 3-0 St Albans

Wimbledon secured the Blue Square South title in the style of true champions – and then Terry Brown warned of changes.

The Dons beat St Albans City 3-0 to wrap-up a fourth promotion in six seasons.

Second-half goals from Kennedy Adjei, Sam Hatton and captain Jason Goodliffe got the party started.

Brown was over the mood to see Wimbledon sign off in style - and admitted his thoughts are already on next season.

He said: “What a great way to end it all. Three goals to send everyone home happy, it’s fantastic. And what an achievement for a supporter-owned club. Brilliant.

“We can’t wait for next season. We know we’ve got a lot of work to do and we can’t wait to get started.

“But the Blue Square Premier will, I promise, be a whole new ball game. We are going to be competing against some massive clubs and we will be part-time – I know how difficult it is going to be.

“In fact, I invited a few players I hope to tempt down here over the close season along to watch today. We are ready for what the Blue Square Premier will bring and we can’t wait for the challenge.

“We need to strengthen all over and of course there will be changes but that’s not for today. We will start the who’s going and who’s staying after the end of season dinner.”

Jon Main missed Wimbledon’s best chance of the first-half when he took too much time when clear on goal. Saints defender Hassan Sulaiman was on hand to deny the forward goal number 34.

Nick Gindre thwarted St Albans’ Paul Hakim in the first half’s final knockings with a top-rate save but after the interval in was one-way traffic.

Adjei was given too much room to pick his spot three minutes after the restart.

And it was 2-0 when unattended Hatton nodded home Tony Finn’s excellent cross after 68 minutes.

Goodliffe reacted quickest in the box after City keeper Paul Bastock spilled Finn’s cross from a short corner two minutes from time to get the champagne flowing.
