AFC Wimbledon favourite Sam Hatton has insisted the Dons need to be quick out of the blocks if they are to make an impression in the Blue Square South.

The Dons suffered an inconsistent end to last season before coming good in the Ryman Premier play-offs to secure promotion.

And Hatton feels any such repeat could scupper their hopes of glory.

Hatton said: “Realistically I think we can make the play-offs this year.

“I’m confident that we have a good enough squad.

“We just need to get off to a good start and take things from there.”

Hatton was on target in Monday’s 1-1 draw with Kingstonian, with the Dons going on to win the landlord-tenant clash on penalties.

And after a poor pre-season run of form, Hatton admitted it was time for Wimbledon to pick things up.

He added: “I don’t think results have been too important up until now as it’s been a case of building fitness and bringing in all the new players.

“But we have to be looking to win the Sutton and Tonbridge games to go into the season on form.”

Hatton was a prominent figure in last year’s campaign.

And the midfielder is confident the current squad has what it takes.

Hatton added: “All the new players that have come in are really good lads.

“They are good on the ball - that is how we are looking to play and that is how I like to play.

“Pre-season has been about getting the passing game going, even in front of our own penalty area - but we won’t be taking risks like that come the start of the season.

“We will need the crowd to get behind us and if they do, we can do well.”
