AFC Wimbledon has today announced the signing of centre back Dan Sweeney on a free transfer following his release from Stevenage last month.
The 32-year-old returns to the club, having been a part of the academy up until the 2012/13 season, and has signed a two-year deal.
Sweeney has steadily moved up the football pyramid since departing the Dons academy, securing a National League South promotion with Maidstone United, a League Two title with Forest Green Rovers and a further League Two promotion with Stevenage.
Speaking to the club, Sweeney said it felt “brilliant to be back” and that he was looking to continue a successful career by coming to Wimbledon.
When asked about his conversations with Johnnie Jackson and Craig Cope before signing, Sweeney said, “They made things really easy for me. [The move] nearly happened in January”.
The signing has added almost 400 professional club appearances’ worth of experience to a squad that was the ninth youngest in League One last campaign.
Sweeney has also vowed to “give 100% for the shirt, the boys, the fanbase and the football club”.
Wimbledon are looking to match last year’s success and survive another League One season, so Johnnie Jackson will be hoping that Sweeney’s experience and fight can help solidify the back line.
