Centuries for Jamie Smith and Dan Lawrence ensured Surrey were saved from defeat in the opening round of the Rothesay County Championship.
The pair added 217 for the fourth wicket at Edgbaston on Easter Monday, Warwickshire's massive lead on first innings proving insufficient to guarantee them victory in the Division One clash.
Favourites to regain their crown after Nottinghamshire toppled them last year, Surrey were ailing at 65-6 on the opening day. Skipper Rory Burns’s ill-fortune in losing the toss in difficult batting conditions only worsened when he was run out in a misunderstanding with opening partner Dominic Sibley.
Smith, promoted to number three, played a loose drive and the visitors were soon in serious trouble. But they were rescued by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes (128) and Tom Lawes – whose 83 was his highest score – counter-attacking boldly to put on 155 for the seventh wicket, a best for their county against Warwickshire as they overtook the 145 put on by Walter Lees and Fred Holland at The Oval 120 years earlier.
That inflated the total to 328 all out, earning two batting bonus points, seamer Ethan Bamber’s 3-59 the highlight.
But it was soon thrown into context as Warwickshire enjoyed the easier conditions, openers Rob Yates (70) and Alex Davies (58) putting on 116 and setting the stage for Dan Mousley’s 144 – his maiden first-class century – and Sam Hain (94) to accrue 212 for the third wicket, taking the hosts into the lead.
Surrey were already missing spearhead Dan Worrall to a calf injury and the absence of Jordan Clark to a bad cold was also sorely felt, lacking the accuracy to apply any pressure.
Sticking to their task, though, they finally bowled out the Bears for 544, young left-arm spinner Ralphie Albert claiming 3-80 after his belated arrival in the attack.
A deficit of 216 left them in danger of defeat going in again for the final session of day three but this time Burns (55) and Sibley (27) saw off the new ball in a stand worth 57. Smith had come under scrutiny during the winter, when his form against Australia in the Ashes suffered following a fine launch to his international career over the previous 18 months. But he was 51no overnight with his side 169-3. Danger persisted with the visitors still behind and needing to bat much of the day.
Smith restrained his recent aggressive intentions in a highly disciplined innings, offering just two half-chances, in cracking 132 while Lawrence – last seen at international level in 2024 but still with England ambitions – played in responsible but enterprising fashion to finish 161no, Foakes (36no) keeping him company when time ran out at 447-4dec .
Surrey will hope their home date against promoted Leicestershire, starting on Friday (April 10) yields a first win of the season.
