Sutton United boss Paul Doswell has revealed striker Gavin Heeroo has taken a 'significant' pay cut to sign on the dotted line at Gander Green Lane.

The former Fisher Athletic midfielder - a Mauritius international - struck the winner in last week's triumph over Croydon Athletic and played an important role in Saturday's 2-1 win at Bromley.

Doswell, who welcomed back youngster Jerson dos Santos and Bentley Graham from a two week trial at Portsmouth, has been delighted with his side's fitness levels since they have returned to pre-season training.

But it is the club's developing talent that has really caught his eye including the efforts of new men Jack Smith, Adam Roberts and Danny Kavanagh.

"I really didn't think we'd get Gavin because of his horrendously high wages," he said.

"His expectations have come down significantly because he has enjoyed being with us so much and is excited by what we are trying to do here.

"What has really impressed me is the talent that is coming through the club. Jerson and Bentley are ready to challenge for places and they will supplement the squad nicely."

The two wins so far have given Doswell's revolution a boost as they contemplate a seven-day break from action ahead of next week's clash with Blue Square South new boys AFC Wimbledon.

But the manager insists results are largely irrelevant until the league campaign proper starts at Harlow Town on August 16.

"It is nice to win but I'd much rather be winning when the league starts," he added.

"We've got a good bunch of lads who have come back keen and are beginning to start gelling as I would like.

"I already know nine of my starting line-up for the first league match, they are pretty much fixed in my mind. The battle of the next few weeks is to decide the last two slots."
