Coach Brian McDermott revealed he will be backing Harlequins RL skipper Rob Purdham for international honours after the second row inspired Quins to a 34-18 win over Wakefield.

Purdham led from the front as Quins overturned an eight-point deficit to stun the visiting Wildcats and register back-to-back wins.

And with the World Cup looming in October, McDermott insists Purdham should be given the chance to add to his four England caps.

McDermott said: "It's not that he just makes the carries and tackles, but within that he makes tackle busts, offloads, try passes and all sorts of quality.

"To play for Great Britain you have to do the hard yakka as well as having the quality and he fits the requirement in both.

"I will be pushing him for selection and I make no apologies for that."

Despite early tries from Scott Hill and Matt Gafa, Quins entered the break trailing 12-10 and conceded a further try moments into the second half.

But in a dazzling final half an hour, Chad Randall, Rikki Sheriffe, Henry Paul and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook all crossed to seal victory.

And McDermott admitted he had read the riot act at half-time.

He added: "I told them exactly what I thought they were doing wrong.

"We took a lot more control of what we were doing in the second half.

"We stopped waiting for something to happen like we did in the first half."

The back-to-back wins hoisted Quins to third in the Super League table.

But McDermott refused to get carried away.

McDermott added: "It's far too early to start talking about that.

"I'm happy with the wins but I'm a little bit disappointed with the points for and against situation.

"We need to wait about eight games in and then we can really take stock of our league position."
