Jonny Williams missed Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers through injury, Lee Bowyer confirmed.
The midfielder, 26, was rested during Tuesday's victory at Nottingham Forest, and was expected to play against Rovers.
Bowyer explained Williams' absence from the squad after picking up a bizarre injury in Thursday's training session.
"You won't beleive it," Bowyer said.
"We left him back on Tuesday to get ready for Saturday, he trained Thurday.
“Him [ Williams] and Macauley tussling for a ball, their legs get tangled and Macauley falls on Jonny.
"Jonny got his foot stuck in the ground and twisted his ankle,"
The Welshman has had a torrid time with injuries over the duration of his career, the latest being a shoulder injury which kept him out for a large portion of this season.
Regardng the severity of his latest setback, Bowyer admitted he "doesn't know the seriousness of it.”
