Carshalton Athletic got back to winning ways last weekend as victory over Enfield Town ended a poor run over the festive period, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

The Robins hadn’t won in four games ahead of Town’s visit but second-half goals by Harry Ottaway and debutant Lewis White, after the dismissal of Billy Bricknell for the visitors, sealed a 2-0 win.

The three points meant Carshalton leapfrogged their opponents back up into the top five of the Isthmian Premier League.

And defender Luke Read, whom helped contribute to a first clean sheet in five attempts, believes that result must act as a springboard for Carshalton’s campaign.

“We were very happy with the win and it’s all about momentum at this time of the season. We need to now get on a winning run and keep pushing up the table,” said Read

“We felt were created some good opportunities in the first-half but maybe our final pass or decision needed to improve.

“So we didn’t feel the need to do change too much after the break and thankfully we made the breakthrough eventually.”

The match swung back and forth but the red card didn’t arrive until the 70th minute - Bricknell went down under the attentions of Daniel Pappoe and, as both players had been cautioned, it was unclear who was dismissed until the striker left the pitch booked for simulation.

“I thought the sending off was a bit harsh. It didn’t seem like a blatant dive but he made a lot of it,” Read added.

“I don’t think that was the reason we ended up winning though. It seemed just a matter of time before we would score.”

And that first goal arrived just four minutes later as Ottaway flicked Jordan Cheadle’s cross over goalkeeper Nathan McDonald’s head for his second of the season.

And substitute White, whom only joined Carshalton on a month’s loan from Dulwich Hamlet 24 hours before kick-off, endeared himself to the home fans by crashing home an angled drive to seal victory.

“Lewis came in and obviously made a good impression,” smiled Reed. “ He seems like a nice lad and he’ll definitely give us another option going forward.”

Next up for Carshalton Athletic is an away game at Lewes on Saturday 11th January (kick-off 3pm).
