Crystal Palace’s Jeffrey Schlupp is doing all he can to break into Roy Hodgson’s starting XI.

Failing to make the starting line up in the previous five fixtures, the 26-year-old has made goalscoring contributions off the bench in Palace’s last two outings.

He backed up the second goal in the 2-0 win at Burnley on the weekend with the only goal of the game in Tuesday night’s fixture against Bournemouth at Selhurst Park.

Already down to ten men after Mamadou Sakho’s dismissal, Schlupp, a midfielder by trade, replaced the injured left-back Patrick van Aanholt in the first half.

The 26-year-old admitted no player likes sitting on the side lines but will fight for more regular game time.

“When you’re not in the starting XI you’ve got to be working extra hard to get in that XI,” the former Leicester City man said.

“When I’m called upon I’ll do my best, try and get in the gaffer’s thoughts for the next game.

“But I trust him, he picks the team he thinks will win the game but you’ve just got to be ready when you’re called upon.”

Despite being down to ten men, Schlupp admitted what his manager told them at half time, encouraging them that sitting back was not an option and that victory was theirs for the taking.

And so it provedd with Schlupp firing past Aaron Ramsdale in the Cherries net after dribbling from near the half way line.

“I came on at left back, with ten men which made it extra hard, but we spoke to the gaffer at half time, he kept us calm and said the game is there to be won, he didn’t want the draw, he wanted us to carry on attacking when the right moments come and we did that.

“Importance wise it (Schlupp’s goal) is up there, I’m happy to get another one and extra special for the team to win back-to-back games.”

The victory bumped Palace up to fifth in the table before Wednesday night’s matches after a poor run of results saw them pick up just one point from a possible 15 prior to their win at Burnley.

“It was a proper Selhurst night, there’s nothing quite like it under the lights, their support is so great we want to repay them with wins and we managed to that tonight.

“We had a rough patch before but speaking to the gaffer we thought we had been playing very well. “We were playing the top teams, but we’ve started the month off well and we hope to continue doing that.”
