Roy Hodgson does not believe the contract extension handed to Christian Benteke will hinder any plans he had in the January transfer window.

Benteke’s contract was set to expire at the end of this season but the club chose to hand Belgian a deal until the end of the 2020/21 season.

It’s been long known that the Crystal Palace manager is keen to strengthen his attack with goals hard to come-by for the Selhurst Park outfit.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s visit of Manchester City, the Eagles boss insisted nothing has changed in regards as to how the club will approach the transfer window.

“Everyone is on the same page, owners of club, Steve Parish in particular, we are all fully aware of where the gaps are and what needs to be done, it’s been the case for a period of time,” Hodgson said.

“At the end when January comes, if that money is there to be spent, and I hope it will be, the most important thing is that can we find the right people.

“We’ve been quite frugal in that respect.

“I am weary of spending other people’s money so if I’m not certain that person isn’t going to be value of money, I won’t spend it.”

Hodgson defended the decision to give Benteke a new deal, citing that a number of clubs would be keen to take former Aston Villa and Liverpool forward should his contract run down.

With one goal last season and failing to hit the net this campaign so far, many questioned the decision.

“You don’t allow a centre forwards contract run out, especially a centre-forward with his CV, his quality and the potential he has.

“Obviously he’s disappointed he hasn’t scored goals, me the fans, and himself, he works hard every day, so it’s not from want of trying that the ball hasn’t gone into the back of the net.

“I’m pleased the club has renewed and put confidence in him and seen how important he is for the club.”

Palace face Manchester City at Selhurst Park on Saturday, Kick-off 5:30.
