Charlton’s Brendan Wiredu is determined to make a statement during his loan spell at Colchester United.

The 19-year-old signed a loan deal on transfer deadline day that will keep him at the League Two outfit until January 4th.

Despite featuring heavily for the Addicks in pre-season, scoring four goals, including a late winner against this new club, manager Lee Bowyer felt a loan move would benefit the versatile midfielder.

The Academy graduate is eager to use his time on loan at the JobServe Community Stadium working under John McGreal to improve his game and send a message to Bowyer.

“I’m here to make an impact,” Wiredu said.

“Luckily enough, the gaffer (John McGreal) trusts me enough to bring me in and give me a chance.

“I’m here to help the team, get experience and play as much as I can.

“When I came here, I saw the ambition of the club and it’s a good opportunity to get into the starting line-up and play.

“I’ll just focus on where I am right now.

“Hopefully if I do go back to Charlton, I can make a statement there.

“But I’m here playing with this team and I’m here to make a statement at Colchester.”

Deployed mainly as a right back at Charlton, Wiredu made his U’s debut in a more central role under McGreal coming off the bench in the 1-0 defeat by Forest Green on Saturday, a positional change welcomed by the player.

“My favourite position is central midfield but I’ll play wherever the manager plays me.

“I just want to go out there and play.”

Colchester travel to Swindon on Tuesday.
