Ollie Watkins hopes Brentford’s 3-0 win over Derby County can kick-start their season.

A Watkins brace and a Bryan Mbeumo strike made the game safe by half time in the Bees’ first victory at Griffin Park this season.

Thomas Frank’s men have had a mixed start to the season, winning just two of their opening six fixtures leaving them 14th as they go into the international break.

Watkins, who’s taken his goal tally for the season to four, believes to get the impressive home win under their belt can be the catalyst as they look to launch an assault on promotion.

“I think we’re just getting started, the Derby result was a long time coming,” the former Exeter man said.

“It’s very difficult when teams come to Griffin Park and sit behind the ball.

“That’s the only chance they really have of stopping us scoring by doing that.

“If they come out and attack us I think we’ll pick them off and beat anyone on our day.

“As soon as we got the first goal it felt like it set the momentum for us.

“It’s been a slow start but hopefully we can pick up after the international break.”

Brentford may have finished a disappointing 11th last season, but Watkins is confident the West London are capable of competing in the top flight.

“From day one Thomas Frank said he wants to get promotion, everyone in the Championship wants to.

“If that’s not their aim I don’t know what motivates them.

“I’m hopeful we can do it this year, we’ve got to believe in our own ability and hopefully we can have a great season before moving into the new stadium.

“But now we rest up, switch off mentality, keep the fitness up before preparing for the Preston game.”
