Here’s how News Shopper rated Millwall’s players in their preseason win against Gillingham.

Frank Fielding – 9 – Had his palms stung in the early exchanges and bravely dived onto Callum Reilly’s boot to rescue the rebound. Also single handily swiped away a dangerous header with ease in the first half and saved a one-on-one effort from Mark Byrne. Is there anything he can’t do?

Shane Ferguson – 6 – A relatively quiet afternoon for the versatile midfielder. Carried out a satisfactory performance at left-back but was not really tested by the Gillingham wingers or fullbacks.

Jake Cooper –  8 – The 6ft 6 centre half is a handful from set pieces last season and that is no different this season. Flicked on a handful of deep free-kicks and got on the scoresheet after heading in a corner.

Alex Pearce –  7 – With an half-empty stadium, you could hear the Lions captain’s commands to his teammates from the terraces. Dealt with the threat of a Gillingham trialist with ease and showed composure on the ball to play out from the back.

Mahlon Romeo – 6 – Supported Mahoney down the right flank but stupidly gave away the penalty that put the Gills level after he shoved a Gills trialist in the back inside the penalty area.

Ryan Leonard –  6 – Despite missing the trip to Portugal due to the birth of his child, the ex-Southend man slotted in seamlessly alongside Williams in the middle of the park.

Shaun Williams – 6 – Despite questions about the Republic of Ireland international’s declining quality, he looked sharp throughout and equally balanced his defensive and offensive duties across both boxes.

Jiri Skalak – 8 – After a disappointing debut season for Millwall, the Czech international seems to be on the road to redemption. He rifled a half-volley into the right-hand corner to open the scoring, though he did put in a few questionable tackles.

Connor Mahoney – 7 – An ambidextrous footballer if I have ever seen one. Gave Barry Fuller a headache all afternoon, with the unpredictability of what foot he would cross with turning the veteran inside out at times.

Aiden O’Brien –  6 – After carrying a knock in the early weeks of preseason, gaining 75 minutes under his belt in his favourable position can only do him a world of good. Had a curling effort saved by Walsh in the second half.

Matt Smith – 6 – Won all but one aerial duel and had a goalmouth header superbly saved by Gills goalkeeper Joe Walsh. Replaced at the break by Bodvarsson.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson – 6 – Showed flashes of his capabilities, but not being paired up with either Smith or Bradshaw proves it is all about minutes at the moment for the Iceland international.
