Millwall are eager to enter the transfer marker but the club’s budget combined with the competitive nature of the window makes deals ‘difficult’ according to Neil Harris.

The Lions boss has been honest in revealing that last season’s 21st placed finish was not good enough and will be carrying out an overhaul in the summer as a result.

However, the harsh nature of the summer market will mean that Millwall will be active until August as Harris attempts to rebuild his squad.

“With the amount of players we need in, it is very unrealistic that we are going to get them all in by the end of the July, let alone the end of June.” Harris told the Club’s website.

“We have to go try and take the small steps of doing one at a time, but if two come along at once – brilliant.

"But if we have a two week break where no one comes in then it could be two in a week then that could be the nature of the beast this summer.

“I have identified positions, I have identified players and the board are working behind the scenes to deliver those players.

Millwall's Harris upbeat on injuries ahead of pre-season

Millwall finished the season four points above the relegation zone, despite breaking their transfer record twice last summer by bringing in Tom Bradshaw and Ryan Leonard.

Yet, Harris believes that while those signings prove that the club have progressed the club’s priority is about getting enough bang for their buck.

“I am clear in my mind that if we want to close the gap between the bottom three to even the top sixteen then we have to move and it is not easy.

“Going back to Financial Fair Play, it makes it very, very difficult to be able to move.

“We have just go to do the best we can as a club to attract players at the right wages and the right transfer fees.

“It is not just about when can we spend £2 million on a player, or £5 million on a player, you have to get value for money but it is ever increasingly difficult to get value for money in the championship.

“Look at players in League One or League Two now, everybody wants two or three million for players.

“We have bid for players already and will continue to do so. I have met with various players and advisors to help move things along.

“But as you can imagine, where we are as a club, trying to compete with big clubs at this level is tough.

“It is a huge window for us, we have to get it right but identifying players and their value is key and we have done that early so we are in a good position."
