A proud Grant McCann had nothing but positives to say about his men after their 4-3 penalty defeat to Charlton.

Trailing 2-1 after the first leg of the League One play-off semi-final, Doncaster upset the odds and won 2-1 after 90 minutes, before a goal a piece in extra time sent the tie to spot kicks.

The Rovers manager felt his side deserved more from a performance that ended with John Marquis and Tommy Rowe missing crucial penalties.

“We played them off the park,” said McCann.

“That’s not being critical of Charlton.

"Firstly congratulations to Charlton, they did it, but we took them all the way and we had glorious chances.

“Apart from the first half at home we were much the better team.

“I’ve a disappointed dressing room, but they should be proud of themselves.

“I’m proud, extremely proud.”

Player ratings from Charlton's play-off win

Doncaster were huge underdogs ahead of the second leg at a Charlton ground where they’ve lost just twice this season.

McCann however insisted his side had what it takes to overcome Lee Bowyer’s men at a sell-out Valley.

“Before the game, before the first game actually, we had no chance, they were so confidence,” he continued.

“But we were outstanding, no one gave us a chance.

“But to a man, we were first class.

“I’ve got a squad who believed

“They believed they could do it tonight.

“They were outstanding.

“I’m disappointed in myself I couldn’t get the players over the line.”

An emotional McCann admitted defeat was tough to take, but when the dust settles they will be back and looking for promotion next season.

“We’ll do it again next year.

“The squad will be stronger.

“This group will be stronger.

“This has given us a taster next season.”
