‘A load of rubbish,’ that was Lee Bowyer’s opinion when discussing the League One Team of The Year.

The EFL announced the ‘best XI’ this season a fortnight ago and the selection didn’t sit well with Bowyer.

Chosen by managers from League One, the side consisted of four Barnsley men, three Luton, two Doncaster, and one each from Sunderland and Portsmouth.

“You’re telling me none of my players are in?” a perplexed Bowyer said.

“Who was in it? I can understand the Luton players, but you’re telling me none of my players are in it?

“Crazy, it’s a waste of time.

“It’s a waste of time doing those things.

“You’re telling me none of my players are in the top eleven?

“A load of rubbish.”

Having beaten Portsmouth both home and away, taking four points from Doncaster and Luton, beating Barnsley ath The Valley and earning a draw against Sunderland, Bowyer's claims are merited.

The midfield chosen of Alex Mowatt, Herbie Kane and Cameron McGeehan particularly surprised the Addick boss, not for who was included, but for who wasn’t.

“Not even Josh Cullen?! Tell me a better midfielder than Josh Cullen that’s played well?

“They’re talking rubbish!”

The exclusion of any Addicks from the line-up could be down to the timing of votes cast by managers from the league.

Despite Charlton being in the play-offs when votes were cast, they weren’t necessarily deemed automatic play-off contenders, seemingly flying under the radar.

Bowyer, clearly aggrieved by the selection could have the last laugh however as his side look to capitalise on any slip-up by Barnsley, Portsmouth or Sunderland in the race for automatic promotion.
