Roy Hodgson understood the frustration but didn’t condone Neil Warnock’s outburst following Cardiff City’s defeat on Sunday.

The Bluebirds boss felt aggrieved by the officiating in his side’s 2-1 defeat by Chelsea, singling out the linesman for failing to spot a clear off-side for the equaliser.

Warnock’s comments are expected to land him in hot water with the FA, but Hodgson hopes people can see how easy it is for emotions to run high in post-match interviews.

“I hope people do understand it in a game that is so emotional as ours,” he said.

“Of course, I understand the frustration of any man giving an interview right after a game having suffered an unjust defeat which comes around from a refereeing error.

“But I’ve got no comments to make about the way he went about broadcasting that, regarding the comments he made, other than to say we don’t have bad officials, quite the reverse.

The defeat meant Cardiff remained in the relegation zone and are now five points from safety. Warnock’s assessment of the officiating may not have been by the book, but were born out of passion according to Hodgson.

“We are paid to behave a certain way, so when we do it, it’s not so easy to defend it.

“It’s an emotional game and passionate, we want to keep it passionate, it’s what brings people to matches.

Neil Warnock’s post-match comments:

"We were let down by the officials - roll on VAR. I might be too old by the time we get it, but that's why we need it,” said Warnock.

"It's the best league in the world with probably the worst officials at the minute.

“I don't know what Mike Riley does with his linesman, but he'll probably get a game next week.

“They don't understand what's at stake.”
