Millwall v Preston - Preview

Alex Neil’s men come in to the contest undefeated in seven with impressive victories over Norwich, Stoke and QPR.

With the latter two coming away from home they’ll arrive at the Den in confident mood.

Ten points and eight places separate the sides, but despite sitting in 19th, five points above the relegation zone Millwall will be buoyed by an excellent win at Derby mid-week

Like Millwall, PNE struggled with picking up wins on the road and it took them until November to break their duck.

Unlike Millwall however they have kicked on and recorded five wins on their travels, more than the Lions’ two.

In their last meeting Preston were the right end of a five-goal feast at Deepdale just before Christmas.

Star Man - Alan Browne

The Lilywhites’ top scorer with 11 has bagged in his last three away games which has contributed to their three successive victories on the road.

His away form has come at a time that the team have seen a change in their form too.

Browne’s firs tight goals of the season all came at Deepdale.

PNE attack has been in fine form in 2019 led by Brown, but with new signings; Jayden Stockley and Brad Potts and the return of Sean Maguire, Millwall's Cooper and Hutchinson will need to be on their metal.

“We’ve got a good understanding of what the gaffer wants from us.

“We have the flexibility in midfield where people can interchange and go into different positions.

“If we need to change formation within a game it’s no problem to us.

“I think that causes opposition teams a few problems so for us to be able to change how we can is a good trait to have.”

The Manager

Alex Neil is a very confident manager at the minute with his side playing good football and going unbeaten in seven in the process.

He guided PNE to a mid-table finish last season and he’s aiming higher this year.

Despite being nine points from the play-off spots, Neil still believes it's achievable in this ‘bizarre’ sport where ‘anything can happen.’

The manger watched the Lions victory at Pride Park mid-week and had this to say:

“There wasn’t a lot in the game, it certainly wasn’t action-packed.

“Millwall had a good shape, a good structure and were hard to break down and they will be pleased that they got the three points.

“It alleviates a little bit of pressure on them and hopefully this game will be a good game and, from our point of view, hopefully has more action in the final third areas.

“They have options and they have experience as well.

“It is always a difficult game against Millwall. If you look at their games across the season, even when they have lost, they have not been battered by anyone, it is normally by the odd goal.

“They will want to finish the season strongly.

“To replicate [the run they had last season] for any team is difficult, but they have shown they are capable and within that spell they were the type of team you didn’t want to face.

“We are on a good run at the moment – seven games unbeaten; we have been playing well and our performance levels have been excellent and we have to try and ensure that is the same this weekend.”
