Patrick van Aanholt has revealed how he become a Crystal Palace player by forcing through his £9million move from Sunderland.

A little over two years ago van Aanholt was in his third year in the North East playing under David Moyes’ relegation fighting Mackems before a falling out with the Scotsman.

In a discussion with countryman Andy van der Meyde the left-back revealed how he was contacted by Sam Allardyce asking him to join him at Selhurst Park.

“My old coach called me, Allardyce." said van Aanholt.

“He was about to become manager at Palace.

“He called me and said ‘I’m gonna sign at Palace, you need to come with me’.

“I said I would come, I don’t like it here at Sunderland anyway.

“So I went to Moyes and said I want to leave. He said ‘no, you’re not leaving!’

“So we argued, we had a really big argument. I told him I didn’t want to train anymore.”

The Dutchman explained he had grown tired of the training methods Moyes used at Sunderland and demanded a transfer.

Claiming he never got on with Moyes, van Aanholt said:

“What kind of coach is that? I’ve never experienced someone like that.”

It wasn’t long after Allardyce was unveiled as Palace manager a fee for van Aanholt’s transfer had been agreed despite him having one game left to play for Sunderland before finalising the deal.

The former England manager spoke to him the day before his final game for Sunderland asking him to take it easy.

“I called Allardyce and he said ‘do whatever you need to do tomorrow but don’t get injured, they've already accepted the offer so you’re already mine’.

The 28-year-old went on to praise the manger he worked under at Sunderland and Crystal Palace claiming he ‘knows what to do to win.’

“If you do exactly what he says he’s the best coach, he gives days off and all.

“At Sunderland I played with everything when he was coach, I had such a good connection with him, and with him it’s all about the stats (running statistics), if your stats are high he likes it.

“If your stats are low he puts you on the bench.”
