Millwall’s Ben Thompson says his loan spell at Portsmouth did him the ‘world of good.’

Following a successful six-month spell in League One, Neil Harris re-called the midfielder to aid the Lions quest for safety in the Championship.

Having played the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday, the 23-year-old says he’s returned to The Den a better player thanks to his at Fratton Park.

“I can say nothing bad about it, the loan did me a world of good,” Thompson told Millwall FC.

“There’s nothing more certain than that I improved under Kenny (Jackett) and Joe (Gallen).

“The guidance and help they gave me was second to none.

“I was a bit hesitant at first going out on loan because I’ve never been to another club but it’s been a massive step in my career, and hopefully I can go on and enjoy that with Millwall.”

Thompson endeared himself as a fan favourite amongst the Pompey faithful and it was confirmed that they enquired about the permanent recruitment of the academy product.

Making 24 League One appearance for the south coast outfit, he guided them to the top of the division before being recalled by Harris, and following his debut at The Riverside Thompson believes he is ready to make the step up.

“There is a difference in the league, it’s a bit stronger, faster, players are technically better and you get punished for a mistake.

“It’s a step up but I can deal with that, I felt comfortable and it proves to me that I can play in it (Championship).

“Obviously it’s been a while since I’ve been in a Millwall shirt but I loved every minute of it.

“It was a great experience but there’s plenty more to come hopefully.”

Thomspon will have to wait another week before he runs out at The Den as he’s cup tied for the weekend’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Everton.

Despite being unavailable Thompson admitted he’s looking forward to the encounter.

“Everyone’s buzzing. There’s a few boys cup tied, but it’s a great contest for us and a great game to go into and enjoy against a top Premier League team.”
