Crystal Palace threatened to come away with a shock win at Manchester United as they try to move away from the Premier League's relegation zone.

The visitors had several chances to take the lead, as a Cheikhou Kouyaté header was ruled offside before Andros Townsend missed a crucial one-on-one opportunity.

Palace will feel aggrieved not to come away with all three points, and despite now being winless in eight games across all competitions they secured a vital point against a tepid United.

Roy Hodgson called upon Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mamadou Sakho, and Wilfried Zaha for the trip up north as the trio returned from injuries.

The first half was even throughout but both sides were wasteful with their opportunities when faced with goal.

Despite Patrick van Aanholt being in acres of space on the edge of the box, the defender failed to hit the target in a glorious opportunity.

And in one of Palace’s several forays forward, a Luka Milivojevic free-kick found Kouyaté to head the ball past David de Gea – only to be ruled offside shortly before the break.

United had chances of their own, and should have gone in front when Wayne Hennessey was equal to Jesse Lingard from close range yards from goal.

Chris Smalling would later get his head to a far-post Juan Mata cross from a free-kick, though the header hit the ground and went wide.

While neither manager made changes at the break, José Mourinho would soon introduce Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini to help turn the tide.

United started the second 45 minutes strongly and looked threatening but time and again they could not find their way through a resolute back four.

Martial would strike the side netting before Lukaku’s header looked destined to nestle into the net, but he was denied by Hennessey’s oustretched glove.

Townsend’s one-on-one stood out for the visitors as an excellent opportunity to take a shock – though deserved – lead, as Palace settled for the point away from home.
