Brentford manager Thomas Frank says that giving Said Benrahma a spell on the substitute bench has brought the best out of the Algerian.

The 23-year-old found himself on the bench for three consecutive matches following his suspension for a red card in the tie against Reading at the end of September.

Having been recalled to the starting line-up for Brentford’s 2-0 win over Millwall at the weekend, Frank was full of praise for the winger and his stand-out performance.

“He was impressive,” said Frank.

“He did well at Forest, created goals and then he got a red card. After that he came on at Leeds but was struggling. He needs to learn that there’s only one way to get back and that’s training hard on the training pitch.

“We left him out to create a stronger character. He’s a talent, a brilliant player with big potential and he’s still learning.

“You can see he’s loving playing football again.”

Ollie Watkins

Frank seems to be using the same tactic with Ollie Watkins who came off the bench and added to Sergi Canos’s strike against Millwall.

“Ollie, we knew what a player he is and what potential he has. All young players go through spells where they aren’t hitting the top level. I think all of you saw him in the first five or six games and thought ‘Wow!’

“Hopefully we can get him back to that.”

Brentford’s win at Griffin Park at the weekend was the Bees’ first win in eight league games and Frank’s first as manager. It result put them 13th in the Championship and Frank says it’s good to get the monkey off their back but still demands more from his players even in victory.

“The win is not about me, it’s about us.

“We’ve been suffering the last eight games not getting a win. A lot of the games I think we deserved more, but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. It’s about hard work and we continue.

“On the ball we should’ve done better, I was angry. If I want more, it’s because I know they have more. I know we can do more.”

Brentford travel to Loftus Road this Saturday to face a QPR side two points above them in 11th.
