Daniel Bentley is adamant Brentford have a winning mentality – and possess it in abundance – despite his team suffering an eight-match winless run in the Championship.

The narrow defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road means the current streak, four draws and four defeats, equals last season’s by the same total.

With that Brentford have now slipped to 16th in the Championship table, theoretically closer to the relegation zone than the playoffs by a single point.

They host a struggling Millwall side next, which has been buoyed by a convincing win over Norwich’s fierce rivals Ipswich Town, before visiting Queens Park Rangers for a west London derby.

Boss Thomas Frank told of his delight in seeing “massive” defensive improvements despite the latest defeat, and Bentley agrees with the manager's assessment.

He said: “I think that we're trying to encourage a ruthless, winning mentality in terms of our defending. I think we have it and, when we want to use it, we have it in abundance.

“But it's just a matter of consistently producing it. We do have a winning mentality at Brentford, I can certainly vouch for that because no one would have asked me that question six games ago.

“We've got to stick together to get out of this small vein of form we're in and I'm 100 percent sure we can turn it around and go on a run.

“We've done it before, we'll do it again. I believe 100 percent in how we do things and the players, the staff, and the manager [Thomas Frank] that we have.”

He spared the Bees’ blushes with virtually the last kick of the first half when Ollie Watkins was adjudged to have brought down Max Aarons inside the penalty area.

Referee Oliver Langford pointed straight to the spot but Jordan Rhodes, who has four league goals this campaign, was denied by Bentley from 12 yards out.

The 25-year-old says he’s not sure whether it was a spot kick because “it happened so quickly”, though he explained what Watkins told him after the save.

Bentley added: “He came up to me and thanked me as we were walking in for half time. I'm just doing my job, I don't need thanking but I appreciate him doing so.

“That's a prime example of us sticking together and the team spirit that we have.

“It didn't make a difference in the end so he got away with it let's say, if you like, and we move forward.”
