Joe Pigott ignited hopes of a major Carbao Cup upset as AFC Wimbledon produced a battling performance in their defeat to West Ham United at the Kingsmeadow.

The striker got the Dons off to a dream start when he headed home from a corner to stun their Premier League opposition.

But after they were reduced to 10 men, Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna, and Javier Hernández saw the Hammers safely qualify for the next round.

Here’s how we rated AFC Wimbledon’s players…

Tom King – 8 – Had some “routine” saves to begin with but got always responded well when called upon. Beaten by a decent strike.

Toby Sibbick – 8 – Was tested when Felipe Anderson was brought on but performed well against him. Got Nightingale out of jail after the equaliser.

Rod McDonald – 5 – A non-descript performance. Was sent off before he could make any real impact.

Deji Oshilaja – 9 – Nightingale was outstanding from minute one but Deji was not far from him. Co-man of the match with Nightingale.

Tyler Garratt – 6 – Got caught out quite a few times down his side, looked a little vulnerable without Pinnock to support. Was better in the second-half, though.

Scott Wagstaff – 8 – Much like Pinnock, his performance was better seen in defence than attack. Tireless.

Liam Trotter – 7 – Brought some good composure to midfield when Wimbledon needed to get out of sticky situations.

Anthony Hartigan – 7 – Very good clearance towards the end of the half when West Ham looked close to equalising.

Mitch Pinnock – 7 – Brought great work rate defensively but struggled against Pablo Zabaleta. Crosses often went amiss. Replaced by Anthony Wordsworth.

Joe Pigott – 7 – Scored a great goal with that header. Unfortunate to be taken off because of the red card.

James Hanson – 6 – Had an incredibly tough task when Wimbledon went down to 10 men, just had to work without the ball most of the match. Replaced by Kwesi Appiah.
