Crystal Palace could not execute when it mattered most as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at Selhurst Park.

The visitors took the lead through Mohamed Diamé when he got to the ball at the fast post and netted for the opener 22 minutes in.

Palace got the reward for their efforts on 55 minutes when Luka Milivojevic converted a penalty, but poor finishing meant they could not grab all three points.

Here’s how News Shopper rated Crystal Palace’s players…

Wayne Hennessey – 7 – Could do very little about the opening goal, as it was a team error rather than individual. Made a great double save on 30 minutes to deny Newcastle.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah – 7 – Like van Aanholt, he had some very good moments going forward. Played a brilliant cross into Zaha. Made powerful forward runs.

James Tomkins – 6 – Made a couple questionable clearances but was still able to recover from them. Even on occasions where Newcastle’s attackers pressed, he got out of trouble.

Martin Kelly – 6 – Was chosen to deal with the threat of Gayle and did well. Made the necessary blocks and interceptions when required before coming off with injury.

Patrick van Aanholt – 8 – Had some excellent moments going forward, especially the through ball into Zaha. A real threat going forward. Not bad at the back either.

Andros Townsend – 6 – Put in some decent deliveries into the box and gave Newcastle something to think about, but his presence was not as keenly felt as it could have been.

Yohan Cabaye – 7 – Did not have the best start to the game. Some passes left more to be desired but picked it up as the game went on. A good outing as he influenced the match.

Luka Milivojevic – 6 – Was quiet throughout the first half and, occasionally, his passes were off-key. Was the man of the moment in the second half when he scored the penalty for 1-1.

James McArthur – 6 – Active on both ends of the pitch. Evidently he is no Sako going forward but was a decent outlet for attacks. Had some great chances but didn’t take them.

Christian Benteke – 6 – He clearly tried to spearhead Palace’s attack and led the front well at times. A little unlucky when the ball bounced to him for a clear goal. A mix of both individual error and lack of luck.

Wilfried Zaha – 8 – Had a slight injury in the opening 10 minutes which affected him but started to look himself. Had a guilt-edge chance blocked but engineered a lot of Palace’s chances.

Mamadou Sakho - 6
