AFC Wimbledon held on to their promotion destiny on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Heybridge Swifts - but only just.

Roscoe Dsane's 25th minute penalty cancelled out Danny Barber's sixth minute stunner to secure a point for the home side as the race for a play off spot goes down to the final day of the season.

Play off challengers Margate could only manage a point against Ashford Town to leave the Dons'nearest rivals a point behind the Kingsmeadow side with just one game to go.

The Dons must match Margate's result against Hendon on Saturday when they take on East Thurrock to secure that final promotion spot - but a Dons defeat and a Margate victory would signal an agonising end to Dave Anderson's men season.

And the Dons boss admits that he knew the race for promotion would go down to the final 90 minutes of the season.

He said: "Did anybody have any doubt that it would go down to the last game of the season?

"It was a difficult game and it was a difficult game to watch. They came for a point and that was what they got.

"I can't fault my players endeavour - but to go a goal down early on was a real sucker punch. It was a dour game of football and there was an awful lot riding on it - my players play under pressure every week and it was always going to be difficult.

He added: "But what annoys me is that if they showed that attitude every week then we would already be in the play offs."

And the Dons' afternoon got off to the worst possible start on six minutes after Barber's 30 yard free kick beat Andy Little at his near post to give Heybridge a shock lead.

But the Dons hit back after 25 minutes when the returning Dsane raced through the middle of the Heybridge defence after being put through by Luke Garrard only to be brought down by Dean Chandler in the box.

The former Aldershot man brushed himself down to slot in the equaliser from the spot.

Chris Gell and Paul Lorraine had half chances to give the Dons a 2-1 lead before half time but that was as good as it got for Anderson's side in front of a 3,377 crown - Kingsmeadow's biggest attendance of the season.

Anderson brought on Northern Ireland U20 international Robin Shroot, Stephen Goddard and Lee O'Leary in an attempt to breakdown Heybridge's dogged defence but the promotion chasers were forced to settle for a point and will be forced to endure a nervy final day of the season.
