NEC Harlequins scrum-half Andy Gomarsall is set to put pen to paper on a new two-year deal, ending speculation over his immediate future.

The 32-year-old World Cup winner has pledged to go on playing as long as he can, and has ruled out a move into coaching for the time being.

The news will come as a relief to Quins fans frustrated by the lack of public activity in the market as the transfer merry-go-round gathers pace.

Bath prop Matt Stevens is the latest player linked with a move to west London, along with club colleague Chris Malone and Northampton lock James Percival.

Current squad members Gavin Duffy, George Harder, Mel Deane and Andre Vos have confirmed they will not be at the Stoop next season.

Chief executive Mark Evans has promised news on replacements in the next six weeks, to coincide with the launch of the 2007-08 season ticket packages.

But Gomarsall, who had been on a short-term contract since joining the club in October, has jumped the gun and is delighted to be extending his stay.

"My future is very much multi-coloured," he said this week after confirming he had agreed terms with Quins.

"All the people I know who have retired have advised me to play for as long as I can, because you are a long time retired.

"I have always wanted to stay and it has just been about agreeing terms. I wasn't looking anywhere else and nobody else has been interested."

Gomarsall, whose first game came in the 26-7 Anglo Welsh Cup defeat at Llanelli Scarlets, has played a key role in turning Quins' season around after it opened with seven straight defeats.

After last week's 34-25 defeat at Gloucester, Gomarsall believes victory over London Irish in Quins' next match is vital to their hopes of finishing in the top half.

Quins are desperate to make amends for their last performance in front of a packed house at the Stoop, when they blew a 13-3 lead over London Wasps.

"Our chances of the top six would be over if we lose to Irish so it is an absolute must- win for us," said Gomarsall.

"We were so disappointed to lose against Wasps and I'm desperate to perform at home again to put that right "Of course we would like to be involved in a European competition at this stage of the season, but the break gives us time to prepare for the curcial games ahead."

And Gomarsall is looking forward to his Quins future with optimism.

"With a few more new faces, I think next year could be very exciting," he added.
