Craig Tanner's scrambled equaliser at the death extended Sutton United's unbeaten run to five with a 2-2 draw at Yeading on Tuesday night.

Having fallen 2-0 down just after the half-hour mark, United produced a spirited comeback to lift themselves up to 45 points in Nationwide Conference South.

It was a lively game that had its best moments in the first half before both sides struggled in a strengthening wind after the break.

Sutton's start promised an extension of their recent good run as Jason Henry, a late addition to the starting line-up when Bashiru Alimi reported injured, flicked a Ross Gaynor cross wide.

Warren McBean twice broke through to fire in shots, the first saved by former Dulwich and Carshalton stopper Paul Seuke, while the second went just wide.

That was all in the first six minutes, but within a couple of minutes United were behind in controversial circumstances.

Phil Wilson had just backpedalled to tip over Joe Healy's lob when he was faced by leading scorer Marvin Morgan as he shrugged off Lewis Gonsalves to go clear.

Wilson's attempt to take the ball off Morgan's feet saw the Yeading player go over, and referee Simon Knapp pointed to the spot.

Wilson was probably lucky to escape with a yellow card, and made then most of his reprieve to save Morgan's penalty.

The incident wasn't finished, though, as Mr Knapp ruled that Sutton players had encroached, and at the second attempt Morgan scored.

Gray joined Wilson in the book for dissent.

Shortly afterwards Sutton might have had a penalty themselves when Paul Honey's shot appeared to hit a defender's hand.

Sutton continued to create chances, with John Scarborough's header blocked and McBean put through by Gaynor to round Seuke, only to find the angle too tight as his shot hit the outside of the post.

It was then the home side's turn to enjoy a spell of pressure.

After Tanner's clearance had denied Morgan and Healy had volleyed wide they doubled the lead when Healy met Michael Barima's cross with a fine diving header.

Crucially, United were quickly back within one goal, though.

Seuke failed to collect Gaynor's free kick and McBean forced the ball in.

They might even have been level before the break as another Gaynor free kick went just too high. The second half was less eventful.

Yeading almost restored the two goal advantage when Scarborough misjudged Seuke's clearance to allow Healy in, but he could only head the ball straight at Wilson.

Gaynor and McBean had Sutton's opportunities, and four minutes from time McBean appeared to have missed the best chance of a point when he mis-hit a shot at Seuke when well placed.

The evening looked set to end in frustration, a booking count of five against none also harsh on United.

But, with time almost up, Seuke's handling again let him down, this time from Gaynor's corner, and Tanner forced the ball in to rescue a point.
