Northern Ireland U20 representative Robin Shroot wants to earn a place in the Milk Cup squad after making his debut for Roy Millar's side last week.

The AFC Wimbledon winger was handed a shock call-up for the Ulstermen's two games against Israel U20s last week.

And, after impressing Millar after coming on as a half-time substitute in a 3-0 defeat in the first game, Shroot played the full 90 minutes as the Irish went down 4-2 to their hosts in the second.

Having had a taste of international football, Shroot is now hoping to gain a place in the squad for the Milk Cup tournament, to be held in Northern Ireland in July.

Should the teenager secure a place in Millar's squad, he will have the chance to pit his wits against the likes of Brazil, Portugal and Paraguay.

But Shroot admitted he had a long way to go before being assured of inter-national action in the summer.

Shroot said: "It would be nice to earn a place in the Milk Cup squad but I can't even think about that possibility right now.

"At the airport on the way back, the manager told me he would try to bring me over to Northern Ireland for the tournament and that would be great.

"I don't want to think about it too much but it is certainly something for me to work towards.

"To play against the likes of Brazil and Portugal would be a great experience, but there is lots to do before then."

Despite pulling on his country's shirt for the first time, Shroot said there were no butterflies before being called on midway through the first encounter.

"It wasn't a case of being nervous," he said.

"I just couldn't wait to get on and, when I did, I didn't want to come off. It was a great experience.

"It was fantastic singing the national anthem and being part of international football was awesome.

"I have learnt so much. International football is a lot more patient and the emphasis is on keeping the ball instead of just trying to get it forward."
