Brentford boss Uwe Rosler fears Clayton Donaldson's future at Griffin Park hangs on whether the Bees are promoted or not.

The 29-year-old's double strike put the seal on a 5-0 thrashing of his former club Crewe Alexandra on Saturday that extended his side's winning streak to six games ahead of this weekend's trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Donaldson, linked with a move to Wolves in the summer, had a tricky start to his Bees career, but was the club's leading scorer last season as Brentford reached the League One play-off final only to lose out to Yeovil Town.

And Rosler, who has opened talks over a new deal with the former Hull City striker ahead of the January transfer window opening, reckons going one step further this term is key to retaining the services of his star man.

"Clayton was one of my first signings and has been performing for me for two years now," said Rosler on Saturday.

"He is playing in a different way now, but is successful. Nobody needs to be afraid that we haven't spoken to Clayton.

"He has given us clear signals what he would like to do. We have given him clear signals that we want to extend his contract.

"I carried him through a difficult spell in his first season and he repaid me with endless goals. I appreciate him and I think he appreciates me.

"But Clayton is 29, hitting 30 and we are Brentford. We have a certain pay structure. With Clayton it very much depends on whether we are in League One or the Championship next season.”
