Boss Uwe Rosler has got behind misfiring striker Will Grigg pledging to get the former Walsall hotshot through his Brentford barren spell.

The 22-year-old started Tuesday night's 2-1 win at Bristol City, but was replaced by substitute Marcello Trotta just nine minutes into the second half.

Grigg has not found the net for his new club in eight appearances since bagging a brace in a 2-0 win over Sheffield United in August.

but Rosler has backed the Northern Ireland international to come good in the same way fellow front man Clayton Donaldson did after a tricky start to his Bees career.

"Will Grigg is a great player who is a bit low on confidence at the moment. But I'll back him and get him through this," said the Griffin Park chief.

"Remember, Clayton Donaldson had a similar spell in his first season. He went many games without scoring. So it is important he works hard in training and comes through this.”

Brentford followed up Saturday's 3-1 home triumph over Colchester United by making it back-to-back league wins at Ashton Gate.

In truth it was a largely forgettable game as the home side, without a win in 21 matches, struggled against an equally inept Bees side for much of the match.

Substitute Sam Saunders made the difference when he came on, first scoring then setting up the second for Donaldson from a corner to give Brentford back to back league wins.

Bristol City enjoyed a couple of good chances during the opening quarter when first Richard Lee's poor clearance was picked up by Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, whose shot cannoned off Tony Craig for a corner.

Minutes later Nicky Shorey crossed from the left and Bobby Reid shot just over the bar from the edge of the box.

Kadeem Harris injected some energy into Brentford's efforts when he picked up the ball and burst through midfield, before picking out Alan McCormack, who cut inside and fired over the bar.

Harris looked purposeful again when he broke down the left and his cross to the back post was headed wide from five yards out by Will Grigg.

Early in the second half George Saville did well to beat three defenders to the left of the box and find substitute Marello Trotta, whose shot was blocked before Clayton Donaldson's follow up effort suffered the same fate.

On the hour mark McCormack sent in a dangerous cross from wide on the right, which Adam Forshaw headed wide.

Saunders then made a dramatic impact, when his deflected 20 yard shot within five minutes of coming on put the Bees ahead.

Shortly after Trotta's shot across goal from the right side of the box was deflected behind and from Saunders' corner on the left Donaldson found the back of the net with a low shot from six yards out.

And ex-Dagenham & Redbridge star Saunders' man of the match contribution was not lost on his manager.

"Sam is a very important player. That's why we gave him a new two year contract," added Rosler.

"He is reaching the same form from last season where he impacted our games very often, from the bench or at times from the start. I'm very happy with his contribution."

The Robins recorded a late goal when Emmanuel-Thomas' cross from the left was knocked in from close range by substitute Marlon Harewood.
