Neal Ardley has bought the first two pieces of a new-look AFC Wimbledon.

Chris Arthur and Barry Fuller arrived at Kingsmeadow on Tuesday as part of Ardley’s master plan for a fresh assault on League Two.

That plan also saw Huw Johnson’s contract cancelled by mutual consent on Wednesday, while only Luke Moore and Kevin Sainte Luce are yet to sign on the dotted line.

The signings of Fuller – from relegated Barnet – and Arthur – from Havant & Waterlooville of the Blue Square South – brought a mixed reaction from fans, but Ardley insisted the pair are perfect for the Wombles.

He said: “We do our homework, we know the kind of player we are looking for.

“One thing we cannot do at AFC Wimbledon is sign star players. What we’re doing is piecing together a good team and these two players will push us in the right direction.”

Arthur, 23, started out at QPR before making 64 appearances for the Hawks as they finished 10th.

Ardley said: “We had Chris watched several times and our scout reported that he is one of the best he had seen in that league.

“I went to see him play and within 10 minutes saw what he had in the locker.

“He is quick and he is a powerhouse.

“Chris has things to work on, there is no denying that, but he has some real talent and a great left foot.

“When we’re looking at the dynamics of our team, one of the things we thought we lacked was that pace and ability to take people on and make things happen.

“That’s what he has been brought in for and I am confident the coaching staff can develop his game further and turn him into a proper League Two player.”

Fuller made 133 appearances for Gillingham, and 41 for Barnet, before being released by the Bees earlier this month.

Ardley said: “We talked about Barry in December when we played Barnet and we were saying that we did not have a player with his sort of character.

“He was very hard, very athletic and, if we’re looking at right-backs, then he is everything we’d want.”
