Victory for Brentford in the League One play-off final on Sunday will be the perfect leaving present for Greg Dyke.

The Bees chairman is stepping down from his post in west London after seven years to take over as the Football Association’s chairman.

In a bizarre twist of fate, his final Bees game will be at his new office, Wembley, as Brentford take on Yeovil Town for a place in the Championship, and Dyke, who turns 66 the day after the game, cannot think of a better way to bow out.

“It’s my final game at Brentford, and I am obviously looking forward to it,” he said.

“I was hoping my last game was going to be three weeks ago against Doncaster, but we didn’t quite get there.

“I think we genuinely deserve to get promotion now and you couldn’t choose a better ending really than to get promoted.

“We will be playing at Wembley too, where my new office will be.”

Brentford have endured one of the most dramatic ends to a season in their history.

They suffered heartbreaking defeat in their final game of the regular season against Doncaster, when they were seconds away from automatic promotion, and then conceded in the last minute of the play-off semi-final against Swindon Town and needed to survive a penalty shoot-out to get to Wembley.

It has been a remarkable few weeks, but Dyke is used to a bit of drama at the club.

“I keep saying – it’s all been very Brentford,” he said.

“If you can do something an easy way or a hard way, why do things the easy way?

“For everyone at Brentford, the past three weeks have been very dramatic, and not good for anyone with a heart condition.

“Hopefully, on Sunday, we’ll do it. Our record in the play-offs isn’t great, but we’re all feeling optimistic.

“After the disaster of Doncaster and the drama of the Swindon games, we are hoping this will be our way into the Championship.

“And, hopefully, there will be less drama this time.”
