Brentford defender Harlee Dean has drawn a line under Saturday’s extraordinary finale at Griffin Park and is focusing on the play-offs.

However, there is no escaping the emotional trauma suffered by the players and fans alike, pictured below, when Marcello Trotta’s injury-time Championship-bound penalty cannoned off the crossbar.

Dean, a virtual ever-present this season, said the team met up for training on Monday, discussed what had happened and then drew a line under it.

Now the thoughts are all positive, but the memories are far from that.

Dean said: “It was probably the worst moment I’ve ever had on a football pitch and in my life. “From being so high thinking we’re one kick away from the Championship, to missing it.

“I collapsed on the pitch, it was gutting. I never want to experience it again.

“It was not the fact they went up the other end and scored, it was more missing the penalty in the first place.

“We knew that was our chance – a draw was not good enough. “Otherwise, we would have chased the ball back and tried to stop them scoring, but everyone just felt the same.

“It was hard to breathe and hard to walk. A lot of the lads were holding tears back because of how much it meant.”

Brentford face Swindon Town in the play-off semi-finals, with the first leg at the County Ground tomorrow and the second leg at Griffin Park on Monday.

Having completed the double over Swindon during the League One season, Dean is confident of a positive result.

“We’ve beaten them twice this season and I am sure we will beat them twice again.

“But the way we approach it will probably be different to how we approached the two league games.

“We will work on that in training – we’ll approach Saturday’s game tactically.

“Then Monday is all about being at home and carrying on the form we had before the Doncaster game.”
