With an FA Cup winner for a father, Mabel-Rose Scales certainly had a lot to live up to.

But after entering the world of athletics, it seems the 11-year-old girl from Wimbledon is well on track to a successful sporting career.

John Scales earned 240 caps for Wimbledon FC during the 1980s and 90s, with the crowning achievement being the 1988 FA Cup win.

But earlier this week he had the pleasure of watching his daughter win the Surrey Athletic Championship gold in the under 13s girls high jump category.

Mabel-Rose jumped an incredible 1m 43cm and is now ranked number one in the UK as a first year under-13 and number seven overall.

Mr Scales now hopes she can continue on from the good start to the 2018 season.

"I’m obviously very proud of Mabel-Rose and having been privileged to have had a long career playing football professionally myself, so pleased to see my daughter enjoying the challenge of pursuing athletics now," he said.

"She just has to watch out for little sister Willow who is hot on her heals."
