Plans for a new, more aesthetically pleasing footbridge at North Sheen station are under way.

Network Rail pledged its support and agreed to help Richmond Park MP Zac Goldsmith launch a design competition offering the public a chance to influence what the finished bridge will look like.

Mr Goldsmith said: “There is no doubt we need the footbridge, but the design [previously submitted] is horribly unattractive.”

Residents asked for a footbridge at the busy Manor Road level crossing by North Sheen station after fears were raised about the dangers of children jumping the barriers - but designs submitted by the rail operator to Richmond Council were criticised.

Competition entrants have a chance to design the bridge but must take into account railway requirements, such as easy inspection and maintenance access.

The competition is open to everyone and should only address the appearance not the structure of the bridge. The closing date is April 22 and a shortlist will be shown to the public at a meeting at Duke Street Church, Richmond, on May 19.

Details about the competition are available at rpnkconservatives.co.uk.
