People have been advised not to ignore one thing when using an electric fan during a heatwave.
With high temperatures proving to be quite consistent this summer, many people in the UK will be turning to electric fans in a bid to keep cool.
Consumer safety charity Electrical Safety First has shared a few details that people should be aware of when using the items.
Giuseppe Capanna, product safety Engineer at Electrical Safety First, said: “As temperatures rise, we expect shoppers will scramble for fans in a bid to stay cool, with many being tempted by cheaper versions they may see on social media or via online marketplaces.
"Safety begins with where you shop and we always advise sticking to reputable high street retailers where you know your product will be made to a high standard."
People urged not to ignore one thing when using an electric fan
If you notice your electric fan making a buzzing noise, Electrical Safety First warns not to ignore it.
Capanna shared: "If your fan is giving off a faint buzzing sound, it may be a sign of an electrical fault or ‘arcing’ occurring.
"Always ensure your fan is plugged in securely.
"If you notice any smell of burning or unusual noises, turn it off immediately. "
Capanna also advises checking for wear and tear, especially if a fan has been stored away for months on end during the cooler parts of the year.
He said: "Always check your device to ensure the cables are in good condition and that the vents are free from the build-up of dust, which can hinder the product’s performance. "
Electrical Safety First also recommended not keeping a fan on overnight, no matter how tempting it might be.
Capanna added: "How you use your fan is really important too and as tempting as it might be to keep it on throughout the night, we advise against it.

"In the event a fault occurs with your fan during the night your response time is greatly reduced when you’re asleep.
"You can ensure you’re not unknowingly using a faulty fan to begin with by checking it hasn’t been recalled by the manufacturer or developed a fault during its lifespan.
"Avoid being lured in by viral heatwave hacks too, that we see on social media sites like TikTok, it’s not uncommon for these hacks to expose you to the risk of electric shock.”
