I tried supermarket tomato soups and a 63p tin beats Heinz

In fact, I have been so “into it” recently, along with reigniting my love for my slow cooker (made far too many sausage casseroles in the space of three weeks), that I have even been trying new brands for the first time, including Greggs.

I can always rely on a serving of creamy tomato soup, seasoned with pepper, accompanied with a slice or two of crusty bread, to banish the January blues.

But of course, the legendary Heinz is my go-to, having grown up with the factory in spitting distance of my childhood home.

I have fond memories of arriving at my grandparents’ house, after walking home from school in the pouring rain on a soggy afternoon, where I could guarantee a bowl was waiting for me, alongside a tower of Lurpack-slathered bread.

But my latest obsession with eating an abnormal amount of soup got me thinking – are there other supermarket brands out there that could rival Heinz? Both in taste and price.

Afterall, with the cost of food continuing to rise, now more than ever I am trying to switch to cheaper alternatives of my weekly food shop staples.

Currently, tins of Heinz tomato soup are priced at £1.70 at Tesco and Sainsbury's.

What is the best brand of tomato soup?

Well, I did the work (in the form of a taste test) so you don’t have to. Let’s see how the likes of Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Lidl ranked when it comes to their own-branded tin of hearty tomato soup.

Tesco - Cream Of Tomato Soup (400G), 63p

First up was from my favourite supermarket Tesco – this Cream Of Tomato Soup is said to be “smooth and creamy, blended with tomato purée for a rich, full flavour."

It was slightly darker in colour than the Heinz soup, but yet it had the same gloriously thick consistency (can confirm, that it’s smooth).

However, I thought it lacked the tangy tomato taste which is crucial in my opinion.

It was also on the sweet side, which isn’t a bad thing, but I would have liked a little more of a kick to it.

Score: 7/10

Asda - Cream of Tomato Soup (400g), 60p

Asda describes its version of tomato soup as “a deliciously creamy blend of tomatoes, with a splash of double cream.”

Although it was very similar in colour, sadly, I didn’t think it had much tomato flavour at all and was probably my least favourite tin.

But it was certainly smooth and creamy.

Sainsbury’s - Cream Of Tomato Soup (400g), 63p

The supermarket says its own-branded tomato soup is “rich, creamy and full of flavour”.

I thought the flavour was similar to Tesco, you could taste the tomato but it was more sweet than tangy.

Again, I can confirm the consistency was smooth and creamy, just like all the others and of course, the iconic Heinz tomato soup.

What's the Difference Between Best Before and Use-By?

Lidl - Newgate Cream of Tomato Soup (400g), 63p

Ding ding ding, we have a winner – I’ve saved the best until last.

Now, truth be told, I wasn’t expecting Lidl to come out on top but it certainly did.

In fact, I would go as far as saying Newgate’s tomato soup is identical to Heinz, if not better, and going forward I think I'll be opting for this instead, mainly due to the price difference.

It had it all – from tangy tomato taste (an absolute must) to its lovely colour, perfect smooth consistency and even creaminess.

Even better, you could save yourself more than 50%, as I paid £1.70 for one tin of Heinz Cream Of Tomato Soup (400g).

Therefore, for the same amount (and same taste etc), you could save yourself £1.07 (if you’re buying single tins).
