British actor Paapa Essiedu is reportedly set to nab the role of Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter TV series.
So far, no actors have been officially cast in the Harry Potter series, which is aiming for a 2026 debut, although Bridge of Spies actor Mark Rylance is close to being signed for the critical role of the wise and powerful Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
From Cillian Murphy as Voldemort (false, per sources) to Rylance as Dumbledore, the rumour mill has been spinning.
Paapa Essiedu has been offered to play Severus Snape in the ‘HARRY POTTER’ TV series.

But now, the latest rumour has caused significant controversy among fans.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, multiple sources say the I May Destroy You actor is up for the role of Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter TV series.
Sources say the actor has been offered the part although it is not clear if negotiations have begun in earnest.
In a statement regarding Esseidu’s casting, HBO said, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation.
"As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
'Cruel set up'
Fans were quick to react to the news.
One posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Taking Harry Potter, where most of the non-bigoted fans jumped ship years ago, then looking to cast a black man as Snape is honestly such a cruel set up.
"The show doesnt look more progressive, you're just putting him in the line of fire of mostly inherently hateful people."
Another commented: "The problem with casting for Snape is no matter who gets the role it’s going to always be second fiddle to Alan Rickman’s performance. Like it’s just too good and too iconic to beat."
Someone else commented: "I hate that I’m now apparently on the side of losers complaining about the race of fictional characters, but Snape is a hook-nosed, greasy-haired white dude, and I will die on this hill."
