The BBC has confirmed that Match of the Day will go ahead without studio presentation or punditry.

It comes after MOTD presenters boycotted the show when the BBC announced that Gary Lineker would be stepping back from the show.

Lineker was told to step back after the former footballer made comments criticising the government's new asylum policy, with the 62-year-old expected not to return until an agreement is reached on his social media use.

Match of the Day to go ahead with no pundits

Now in a statement released by the BBC, they have confirmed that MOTD will go ahead with no presenters or pundits.

As a spokesperson has said: "Some of our pundits have said that they don’t wish to appear on the programme while we seek to resolve the situation with Gary. We understand their position and we have decided that the programme will focus on match action without studio presentation or punditry."

Lineker got a mass amount of support from fellow pundits, seeing Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Alex Scott, Jermaine Jenas and more speak out.

What did Gary Lineker say?

On Tuesday (March 7) Lineker had commented on a Twitter video put out by Home Secretary Suella Braverman, in which she unveiled government plans to stop migrant boats crossing the Channel.

“Good heavens, this is beyond awful,” he wrote.

Responding to the sports broadcaster, another Twitter user described his comment as “out of order”, adding that it was “easy to pontificate when it doesn’t affect you”.

Lineker responded: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.

“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
