Croydon South MP Croydon Richard Ottaway has welcomed the successful third reading of his Private Member's Bill.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Bill proposes a whole-scale reform of the scrap metal industry, which is the principal outlet for stolen metal.

The Royal British Legion, War Memorials Trust and Church of England back the Bill, which had its third reading on Friday.

Mr Ottaway said: "I am thrilled with the result. Many tributes were paid to this nation's heroes who laid down their lives for this country on Remembrance Sunday and we have achieved something special to honour that legacy.

"Metal theft is no petty crime. We hear regular reports of metal thefts that cut off power to communities and hospitals, putting people's lives in danger.

"I am incredibly proud of Parliament today. The consensus and care from all members who attended third reading and contributed to a considered and thorough debate is a real credit to them and will make a real difference to the lives of all their constituents."
