Carbon emissions have dropped at Heston fire station after it underwent a "green makeover".

The fire station is one of 10 taking part in the Mayor of London's Re:Fit programme, which encourages public sector organisations to take simple steps to cut fuel bills.

Between them they are saving 242 tonnes of CO2 a year - enough to fill Sydney Opera House five times over.

Figures show that carbon emissions fell by as much as 23 per cent at Heston fire station after it introduced draught proofing on doors and windows, motion censored lights and a new boiler.

Gas and electricity consumption has also fallen as a result of the measures.

London Fire Brigade is the first participating organisation to complete the first wave of buildings in the scheme, which also includes Transport for London, the Met Police, and 42 Greater London Authority group buildings.

The Mayor has now pledged another 58 buildings to the Re:Fit programme.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said: “Well done to the London Fire Brigade for being the first to the finish line in giving their buildings a green makeover.

“These stations will save a whopping £50,000 per year as a result of these works and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

"I am encouraging all public sector organisations to take part in this innovative programme that makes huge reductions to their energy bills.”
