The University of Roehampton is claiming that more potential students than ever are due to attend its open day next week, despite the rise in tuition fees.

Around 1,200 people are expected to turn up to the open day at the university in Roehampton Lane on November 16.

The university is planning to charge students £7,900 for most honours degree programmes, with a fee of £8,250 for dance, biological science, sport science, zoology, marketing and management courses.

Foundation degrees will set back students £7,500.

A spokesperson said the university's current admission statistics, applications and enquries are in line with the national average, which shows less students have applied for a university place so far this year.

She said: "There is an unprecedented number of people attending the open day. It seems in total more students are taking their time and exploring all of their options.

"They are getting to understand their courses and the campus, we are finding that applicants are taking more time considering their decision. It is a bit of a change than last year."

Some universities are reported to be facing a huge drop in student applications due to the big increase in fees. City University in north London is reported to be facing a 40 per cent drop.
