Aston Merrygold from boy band JLS has urged school- children to turn their backs on cyber-bullying.

Merrygold visited Bishopsford Arts College in Morden on Tuesday to launch a new scheme from charity Beatbullying, aimed at tackling harrassment via the internet or mobile phones.

Merrygold became involved with the charity after experiencing bullying at school himself.

Speaking after he was made an ambassador for the organisation, he said: “Often the victims of bullies feel that there is nowhere to turn and ask for help and that is what makes Beatbullying really stand out to me – they are here to listen and help.”

Bishopsford headteacher Andrew Barker said the singer was glowing in his praise for Bishhopsford students.

Mr Barker said: “I am extremely proud that the strong work of the school and its zero tolerance bullying policy has been recognised and the students have been rewarded by the visit of such a prolific and high profile star.”

The million-selling Croydon group JLS shot to fame after finishing as runners-up on television talent contest X Factor in 2008.
