A South Thames College teacher has won Outstanding BTEC Tutor of the Year at the first National BTEC Awards.

Euthan Newman, who teaches the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at the Wandsworth college received the award at the Royal Society of Arts in London on July 7.

The awards were hosted by DJ Scott Mills and were attended by nominated students, teachers, and leaders in education along with John Hayes, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning.

Mr Newman arrived at South Thames College with 20 years’ experience as a manager in the care home industry.

He said: "It is such an honour to win Outstanding Tutor of the Year at the inaugural National BTEC Awards. I am extremely passionate about teaching Health and Social Care to the students at South Thames College. Seeing them achieve and progress as people makes is all so worthwhile and I love working that bit harder to make their learning fun and exciting and to help them think in new ways.

"Every year, thousands of BTEC students go on to great universities and fantastic jobs. They achieve great things in a wide variety of careers; from business and engineering to ICT and healthcare. It is vital to support and celebrate the hard work and achievements of outstanding BTEC students and their teachers."
