A company set up by teenagers to solve the age-old problem of dark clothes staining white clothes in the wash will represent Kingston in a south London competition.

Phoenix, which was created by students at Tiffin Girls’ School, designed a hanging laundry bag split into separate pouches for dark and light clothes.

The company won the Richmond and Kingston finals of the Young Enterprise scheme competition on Wednesday, May 4, and will now face off against schools from across south London on Friday, May 13.

The units, which sell for £24.99, are designed to hold 7kg, the average wash load, and include a display of laundry symbols and their explanations on the back to prevent shirt-shrinking.

The team also won the best overall company award at the National Stratford Trade Fair in April, and the best trade stand at the Eden Walk trade fair in Kingston in February.
