A graphic design student from Epsom University will have one of her pieces displayed in the Foreign Office after she won a national competition.

Third year Yanagita Asako, 24, won the competition run by the No Women No Peace campaign, which seeks to highlight the issues faced by women in conflict zones.

Asako, from the town of Oiso in Japan, submitted a poster which was selected by judges to front the campaign and was able to present the design to William Hague at the Houses of Parliament at its official launch.

She said:“I was so excited when I learned I won, and woke my mother by calling her in Japan. Mr Hague was very nice when I met him at the awards, and he praised my artwork. I am very honoured that I could present him with it, and it might be on the wall of the Foreign Office.

“As a designer I found this campaign really thought provoking, having grown up in Japan where there is still a big gender gap even though it is a developed country.”

Judge Ali Alverez, who presented the prize, said: “Real gratitude goes to Asako for creating a piece of communication that was simple and strong; communicating the imbalance of it all without more women in the picture.”
