A Merton Park school has submitted plans to beef up its security by closing off a public footpath used by nearby residents during school hours.

Rutlish School are hosting a public meeting on Monday, November 22, to discuss their plan to close off access to the footpath via Mostyn Road during 8.30am to 3pm.

The path provides a direct pedestrian route between John Innes Recreation Ground and John Innes Park, which provides a useful access route to Merton Park tram stop.

But the school’s headteacher, Alex Williamson, said it was his responsibility to protect the school’s staff and students from potential attacks.

Mr Williamson said: “It is quite quaint to have a public footpath running through but for years our Governors have identified it as a risk.

“That may be a very small risk, but if something did happen the outcome would be pretty serious. In that event, at least we could say we tried everything we could to prevent an attack happening.”

The Leader of the Council, Stephen Alambritis, has backed the proposals: “We must always take the view of the headteacher seriously when they put in a request.”
