Building work at Carshalton College’s £4.3m leisure complex is now fully under way and on course to be completed in the summer.

The centre, which will be open to the public, will have an 18m swimming pool, sauna, sports hall, two dance studios and a 70-station fitness suite.

The new facilities will mean the college can offer a sport science foundation degree from September 2010.

Building rubble and materials from the college’s old sports hall were recycled to form part of the facilities at the 2012 London Olympic Games site.

Carshalton College joined up with leisure equipment company Pulse to make the complex possible.

Pulse is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the new leisure facility.

Jobs will also be created as a result of the new leisure facility, ranging from cleaners to a centre manager.

Carshalton College principal Dr David Watkins said: “Students tell us additional sports facilities are high on their list of priorities, so to see this new building start to take shape in front of our eyes is exciting.

“The facility will be a great focal point for the Sutton and Carshalton community in terms of a new sports and leisure facility right on their doorstep, the additional college courses in sport and more job opportunities.

“The first phase of the project saw the demolition of the existing sports hall to make way for the construction of the new purpose-built leisure facility.”
