The number of Kingston children without a secondary school place for September has doubled compared with last year, but the council has said more places are coming in the next two weeks.

The council has written to parents this week, revealing the places their children have secured, with 60 per cent due to receive their first preference and 19 per cent their second places respectively, but the number with no offer has risen from 25 to 61.

Kingston secondary schools received a total of 1,565 applications, and 95 per cent received one of their preferences.

A council spokesman said the overall figures were in line with previous years, and the authority should be able to find places for all Kingston applicants.

Councillor Patricia Bamford, executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “I don’t think we should be too concerned at this stage because there will be people who had more than one offer. The shakedown will free up places at other schools.

“I’m fairly confident will be able to give places to all the children who want them. We have got enough places.”

Parents have two weeks to respond to their offers, which will be finalised on March 16.
